News on backcountry adventure and wilderness survival.

Gone are the days of cheap plastic coolers that would tip over on the dock and let your ice melt before the day was over. The new trend is all about soft-sided backpack coolers which are easier to carry, organize, and can store other gear. One of our favorite coolers in this category is the Pelican Dayventure.

Our multimedia producer Roy Holdford had this Pelican out for a spring’s worth of adventures, and here’s how it performed.

See It

  • Volume: 19QT
  • Can Capacity: 6″
  • Body Material: Double-Coated 840D TPU
  • Size: 12.1” x 7.1” x 21.7”
  • Leak-resistant zipper with a waterproof seal,
  • Exterior pocket keeps dry goods separate and secure
  • Available in 4 colors: Light Gray, Indigo, Coyote, Desert Sage

Holdford used this cooler on a fishing trip in Ontario and while roaming around on his spring turkey tour.  The overall design of the cooler makes it very versatile. You can put drinks in the bottom compartment and food (that you don’t want to get crushed or soggy) in the top compartment. Or if you want to just carry one bag in the boat or to the beach, you can put all your cold stuff in the bottom compartment and use the top compartment as a dry bag (for towels, rain gear, etc). There’s also a smaller compartment for holding stuff like your phone, keys, and wallet.

The upper compartment has a wide rolling top and lighter insulation. If you have items that must remain cold for a long period of time, you’ll want to put them in the bottom compartment.

Overall, the Dayventure is comfortable and easy to carry. It has several grab handles that are convenient, and the shoulder straps are nicely padded. There’s room to easily store a day’s worth of food and drinks.

What the Pelican Dayventure Does Best

This is a versatile piece of gear that’s part dry bag and part cooler. As the name suggests, it’s ideal for daily adventures. It’s a great option for the boat or the beach as it has plenty of room and organizational space for gear items (not just food).

Where the Pelican Dayventure Can Improve

The upper compartment is great as a dry bag but we’d like to see a version that had a little more insulation for keeping ice longer.

Final Thoughts

There are about one million coolers on the market. The Dayventure is unique because of its versatile design. If you’re looking to simply keep drinks cold, you can certainly get away with using a cheaper product. But if you are looking for a bag that you can use in a bunch of different ways on all your summer adventures, it’s worth considering the Dayventure.
