We reported in early August how the nearly six-year-long streak of firearms sales above 1 million had finally come to an end. Many in the anti-gun camp even hailed the decrease as being a positive first step. However, August sales jumped back up above the 1-million mark, with the National…

The biggest handgun advancement of the last decade is the widespread adoption of reliable red-dot carry optics. Once dismissed as fragile toys, modern reflex sights have proven themselves to be reliable under harsh conditions, in competition, on duty, and in military testing. Battery life is astonishing (20,000–30,000 hours is common), LEDs and electronics are mature, and optical quality is excellent. Today, you can reasonably bet your life on a good RDS. Closed vs. open emitter Open-emitter dots work fine for many shooters. But enclosed-emitter (closed) designs offer clear advantages for a carry or duty gun: the emitter and glass live…

In the dense jungles of Vietnam, where every movement could mean life or death, MACV-SOG needed a rifle that was short, fast, and deadly. They found it in the CAR-15, a weapon that could be shouldered in a narrow bamboo thicket, fired from a helicopter skid, and carried for days behind enemy lines. Today, decades after its heyday, I set out to build my own modern tribute to that iconic gun. This is my bastardized version, part historical homage, part practical shooter. It’s not a one-for-one clone, but it captures the XM177E2 Vietnam-era CAR-15 vibe while adding some modern reliability…

This story, “Better Pheasant Hunting Alone,” was originally published in the October 1984 issue of Outdoor Life.  Over the past several years, I’ve kept records on more than 100 pheasant hunts. During that time, I’ve hunted both alone and with as many as nine other gunners. All in all, I’ve come up with some pretty interesting figures. For instance, my take on solo hunts has averaged more than twice that of when I was with two or more other people.  The…

Few firearms command attention quite like the Mark XIX Desert Eagle Carbo Blue. With its stunning PVD sapphire finish and the brute force of the .50 Action Express (AE) cartridge, this version of the legendary Desert Eagle enters a realm beyond typical handguns, one of mechanical artistry, cinematic iconography, and elite-level collecting. Desert Eagle Legacy: The Origins of the Carbo Blue Icon The Desert Eagle was first conceptualized in the early 1980s by Magnum Research Inc. (MRI) in the United States. The firearm was then refined and produced in partnership with Israel Military Industries (IMI), later rebranded as Israel Weapon Industries…

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.  Of course, there is a small segment of our society that is doing perfectly fine. The wealth of the top 1 percent has reached $52 trillion, and CEO salaries have jumped 1,094 percent since 1978. Many of those who are sitting at the top of the economic pyramid wonder what all of the fuss is about. But for the rest of us, we know how badly economic conditions have deteriorated because we are living it every day. The following are 18 numbers which clearly show what direction things…

This story, Killer Bears of Alaska, was originally published in the March 1981 issue of Outdoor Life. Do grizzly bears hold grudges? How dangerous are grizzlies? Ask Al Thompson, a 44-year-old Division of Fish and Wildlife Protection officer (game warden) who patrols Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. He won’t commit himself on the first question, but he doesn’t mince words on the second.  Al and his wife Joyce moved north from Casnovia, Michigan, in 1968, and they went deep into the Alaska Range…

Despite skyrocketing prices on everything from eggs to hunting leases, you can still buy high-quality and even USA-made hunting knives for under $100. Spending more will get you better steel and nicer build quality, but these budget-friendly knives perform with the best of them. Here are my top picks based on head-to-head testing and use in the field. See It Pros Easy…

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has passed a measure requiring so-called “universal” background checks for gun purchases in the Keystone State. Passed by a 104-to-99 margin, this bill would outlaw the private sale of long guns unless firearm purchasers get government permission first. It would also set the stage for a registry in Pennsylvania for all firearms transactions, just like there already is for handguns. Notably, five Republicans—Joe Hogan, Kristen Marcell (who later changed her vote to NO, but that did not affect the final vote), K.C. Tomlinson, Martina White and Craig Williams—voted in favor of the measure. Had they…

It has only been two days since the federal government shut down, and a select number of hunters in southeastern Colorado are already feeling the pinch. Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced Thursday that pronghorn hunting has been suspended on Fort Carson (GMU 591) and the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (GMU 142) due to the ongoing shutdown.  Those hunts were slated to begin Saturday, and officials say it’s possible that other big-game hunts will be suspended at the two military…

Video that has been generated with the use of artificial intelligence is popping up everywhere these days. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is launching a new AI video generating app called Sora, which is causing world-wide headlines this week.  So it shouldn’t be a surprise that AI-generated video would infiltrate outdoor media, too. And yet, I have to admit that I was dismayed when I first stumbled upon a video of Kayla, an AI character who offers hunting tips and tactics…
