What the US Embassy Attack in Baghdad Means for Preppers

What the US Embassy Attack in Baghdad Means for Preppers

I spent years overseeing the guard force security contract at the embassy in Baghdad. I know this 100+ acre compound well, and I know exactly what it means to rely on its defensive systems.

There has been a recent shift in the security landscape that every preparedness-minded person needs to pay attention to. Recently, Iranian proxies launched a drone and rocket attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. One of this world’s most critical and heavily fortified diplomatic facilities isn’t just another localized target. It signals a major change in how warfare and terrorism are conducted—and it has direct ripple effects for us back home.

During the attack, a kamikaze drone specifically targeted and destroyed a key defensive radar system known as the C-RAM. To understand why this matters to you and your family, we need to look at what this means for global stability, the economy, and your everyday readiness.

Understanding the Target: The C-RAM System

The C-RAM (Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar) is an automated, rapid-fire defense system. It uses a 20-millimeter Gatling gun that fires 4,500 rounds per minute to intercept incoming missiles, rockets, and drones. It relies heavily on a highly advanced radar system to track and destroy these threats in the air.

During this recent attack, a low-cost drone equipped with a passive homing seeker bypassed these defenses and took out the C-RAM’s radar unit. This leaves one of the world’s most critical and heavily fortified diplomatic facilities highly vulnerable.

The Global Ripple Effect

Why should a drone attack halfway around the world matter to your family’s preparedness plan? Because it proves that cheap, easily transportable, and concealable, mass-produced drones can successfully defeat multi-million-dollar defense systems.

If state and state-funded actors can mass-produce $50,000 drones to overwhelm advanced security, they can target military bases, critical infrastructure, and shipping routes globally. This creates a chain reaction that directly impacts your daily life:

  • Soaring Energy Prices: Instability in the Middle East, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz, threatens global oil supplies. This can cause gas prices to spike dramatically, heavily impacting your household budget.
  • Economic Instability: Global conflict causes stock market volatility. Rising shipping and insurance premiums, along with disrupted supply chains, quickly lead to higher costs for everyday goods at your local grocery store.
  • Increased Cyber Threats: As physical conflicts escalate, so do the potential cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure, banking systems, and personal data. A recent example is the hacking and public release of FBI Director Kash Patel’s emails.

Your Action Plan: How to Prepare

When the seriousness of the world ramps up, the best response is calm, practical action. So, the focus should be on building resilient systems for your family. With that in mind, here is what you can do right now to prepare for these global shifts.

1. Build a Financial Buffer

Economic shifts hit hard and fast. Work toward keeping three to six months’ living expenses in a liquid, easily accessible form. More importantly, do your best to become debt-free. When you eliminate high-interest credit card debt, you free up resources to invest in your family’s actual security and well-being. It also allows you to do more things and enjoy life more. Getting out of debt when possible is a good thing.

2. Secure Your Energy and Fuel

Given the potential for fuel shortages and price spikes, make it a habit to top off your gas tank at least once a week. If you drive a lot, I’d top off your tank more regularly. Do not let it drop below half. If you’re able to safely store an extra 5 to 10 gallons of fuel at home, do so. Also, if you plan to store that fuel for more than a couple of months, add fuel stabilizers like STA-BIL, to extend its shelf life. If you rely on propane for cooking or heating, get your tanks filled now, and consider adding a backup tank to your preps.

📣 Additional InformationAccording to the STA-BIL website, “STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer will keep fuel fresh for up to 24 months, depending on the quality, type, and source of the gasoline, as well as storage conditions.”

3. Fortify Your Pantry

Supply chain interruptions quickly empty supermarket shelves. Stock up on non-perishable foods that your family actually eats. Build your food storage. If you’re on a budget, try integrating it into your regular weekly shopping so it doesn’t strain it.

4. Upgrade Your Cyber Defense

While nation-state cyberattacks often target large-scale infrastructure, your personal online hygiene still matters. Implement two-factor authentication (2FA) on all your important accounts. Use a reputable password manager, keep your computer and phone operating systems up to date, and be highly cautious when using public Wi-Fi networks. You can also consider subscribing to online identity protection services to keep you notified of any issues.

5. Update Your Travel and Family Plans

Ensure everyone in your family has current IDs and understands your emergency communication plan. Keep a practical “Get Home Bag” in your vehicle with some cash, basic supplies, and comfortable walking shoes. Your primary goal during any disruption is to get back to the safety of your home and family.

The Bottom Line

Watching global turmoil unfold can be stressful, but mindset is your strongest tool. Acknowledge the realities of the world, but do not let fear drive your decisions. Take these practical steps to insulate your family from economic and physical disruptions.

Keep your head on a swivel, stay informed, and focus on what you can control. Remember, you are just one practical step away from being better prepared.
