Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadWhen things start to break down—whether it’s a slow grind or a sudden, shocking event—there are certain items that don’t just become valuable, they could become dangerous to have. Not because you shouldn’t have them, but because once others know you do, or if…

Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadMost people who build a survival kit follow a familiar and typical checklist: knife, water filter, first aid kit, flashlight, shelter. And they should. But once those bases are covered, the average kit starts to fall short. Not because it’s missing gear, but because…

Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadThe need to prep hits people in different ways. For some, it’s a moment during a doom-and-gloom news show. For others, it’s a weird feeling in the gut walking through a grocery store with holes on the shelves. And sometimes, it’s looking at your…

Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadYou care. That’s why you prep. And if you care enough to be prepared, odds are you also care enough to want the people around you to be ready, too. But here’s the problem: the more you try to help others get ready, the…

Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadThis article—and the podcast that goes with it—was sparked by a listener in the Mind4Survival Facebook group. Audra McKinney asked: “What do you do when your gut tells you to prep more, even though you’re already stocked?” If you’ve been at this a while, you’ve probably asked yourself the same thing. You’ve got food. Water. Backups. A solid plan. Maybe even a second location nobody knows about but you. You’re not new to prepping. So why do you still feel like something’s missing? That quiet gnawing in the back of your mind—the one that…

After bushwhacking for 30 minutes, my daughter and I sat on a steep cliff face for the second time that morning, waiting for my husband to find a barely marked trail. We agreed to amend the deal: Now it was one Jolly Rancher for every half mile. Hours later, I couldn’t argue with the bargain. Limber and whitebark pines, dead and fallen from wind and age, crisscrossed everywhere we tried walking. Hiking started to feel more and…

You can read more stories from legendary outdoor writer Jim Rearden here. One dark night in the summer of 1953, a brown bear about the size of a brewery horse, pigeon-toed and inquisitive, nosed into a tent pitched on the Alaska Peninsula. A moment later a shot was fired inside the tent, then another. A flashlight went on, and an angry, half-scared Texas voice reeled off a…

All five active-duty military services met or exceeded their fiscal 2025 recruiting goals, according to the Department of Defense, marking what Pentagon officials described as the strongest recruiting performance in 15 years. The Army signed contracts with 62,050 recruits, or 101.72% of its goal, while the Navy brought in 44,096 recruits, exceeding its target by more than 8%. The Air Force recruited 30,166 airmen; the Space Force brought in 819 Guardians; and the Marine Corps met its goal of 26,600 recruits.Collectively, the five services achieved 103% of their active-duty recruiting mission, according to Pentagon officials. After several years of recruiting…

The Army announced Thursday the creation of the Space Operations Branch, a dedicated career field for soldiers specializing in military space operations. The branch formalizes space as a permanent warfighting specialty, with personnel focused on protecting U.S. assets and helping prevent adversaries from targeting joint forces from outside Earth’s atmosphere.Brig. Gen. Don Brooks, deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, called the announcement “a rallying point” for Army space personnel.“For 27 years, Army space officers have been working to normalize Army space operations, and that’s what this branch designation now does for the Army,” he said. The branch…

This article was originally published by Per Bylund at The Mises Institute.  Why would anyone invest large sums of capital into creating something new with uncertain income? This question captures the core of the argument for intellectual property, or the legal protection of inventors’ ideas from being copied and put to broader use. The simple logic appears intuitive and therefore persuasive, but does not stand up to scrutiny. Why? Because it applies to all entrepreneurship, which is always an investment in something of uncertain value. Yet this does not seem to stop entrepreneurs. Or, rather, it moderates which entrepreneurial projects are…

Editors note: this is a developing story. The U.S. struck Iranian missile, drone and radar sites on Friday, U.S. Central Command said, in what the military described as a response to Iran’s attack on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship sailing the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks came after Iran struck the M/V Ever Lovely with a one-way attack drone on Thursday, the command announced in a statement, adding that the vessel was leaving the Strait of Hormuz along the coast of Oman when hit. The military said Iran’s strike violated the already-precarious ceasefire signed between the two countries last week. The 60-day…

The U.S. Army this week gave its chaplains 90 days to strip the rank from their uniforms in a move that puts a definitive timeline on a directive championed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has sought to shift religious leaders’ identities from their military grade to their faiths. Army chaplains have 90 days to remove rank from Army Combat Uniforms and 180 days to remove it from cold weather gear. The new guidance, signed by Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, also tells chaplains exactly where to attach religious branch insignia on uniforms and headgear. The changes do not…
