President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday aiming to rebrand the Department of Defense as the Department of War — a long-telegraphed move aimed at projecting American military toughness around the globe.“It’s a much more appropriate name, especially in light of where the world is right now,” Trump said. He said the previous name was “woke.”The order comes as some of Trump’s closest supporters on Capitol Hill proposed legislation that would codify the new name into law, with Congress having the sole power to establish, shutter and rename federal departments. Absent a change in law, Trump will authorize the…

The Pentagon has changed its drug screening policy to test service members for psilocin, indicating the use of psilocybin mushrooms, according to an Aug. 18 memo. Psilocin will be added to drug testing panels for troops as of Oct. 1, “due to the risk of impairment and subsequent deterioration of security, military fitness, readiness, good order and discipline,” according to the memo. Psilocybin mushrooms, commonly known as magic mushrooms, produce hallucinogenic effects when consumed. After being ingested, psilocybin within the mushrooms is metabolized by the body and transformed into the active drug psilocin. High doses of psilocybin mushrooms can trigger…

I recently had a dental emergency when I started feeling severe pain in a tooth that just recently got a crown. I was mystified as to why the tooth would start hurting when I had already gotten treatment for the tooth and had spent a lot of money on a new crown. It happened over a long holiday weekend, so no dentist was available. Fortunately, I had a small emergency dental kit, which helped me get some relief until I could see a dentist.  This situation also got me thinking: What if you have a dental emergency during a disaster?…

Most firearms industry observers knew that gun sales in excess of 1 million a month couldn’t continue forever. That’s why few were alarmed when the number of background checks for firearms transfers fell to 980,000 in July, the first time the number was below 1 million in nearly six years, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). The August 2025 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,091,342, however,…
