The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is expanding rapidly. There are now over 900 suspected cases, as violence and displacement make it more difficult for health care officials to contain the outbreak. Out of the 900 suspected cases, 101 infections have been confirmed so far,…

The Marine Corps is moving deeper into Alaska with an initiative designed to build a more persistent presence in the Arctic and prepare service members for extreme cold-weather operations. The effort, called “Campaign – Alaska,” will establish a new rotating force that will train and experiment in the frigid conditions, the Corps announced Saturday, in a move it said was a result of the region’s increasing geopolitical importance. “In this era of strategic competition, Alaska is critical to homeland defense and a vital theater for global power projection in the Arctic,” said Lt. Gen. Roberta “Bobbi” Shea, the commanding general…

One American has officially tested “mildly positive” for Hantavirus. The United States Department of Health and Human Services claimed that it was one of the 17 Americans being repatriated from a hantavirus-struck cruise ship had tested mildly positive. Seven cases of the Andes hantavirus have now been confirmed among passengers on board the cruise ship, MV Hondius, the World Health Organization said. Symptoms of Hantavirus can include fever, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and shortness of breath, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Another potentially serious disease caused by hantaviruses is hemorrhagic fever…

With the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford en route home from what has become the longest U.S. Navy float since Vietnam, the service is reconsidering how to sustain a wartime fighting force. That’s according to Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman, who addressed service needs and quality of life concerns at a forum hosted by Military Officers Association of America this month. With the back-to-back operational demands of the military intervention to capture and extract Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro in January, followed by the airstrikes on and subsequent naval blockade of Iran, and amid ongoing drug interdiction operations…

I grew into hunting because my natural father, Clary Palmer Wilson, has long been a professional hunter in East Africa, and hunting is in my blood. My earliest memories are of being on safari when I was five or six years old. Between safaris on which Clary guided clients, he often took my mother, my two brothers, my sister, and me for a month or two on…

Russia and Ukraine on Monday reported fighting along their long front line despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire, and each accused the other of launching drone and artillery strikes.Ukraine and Russia agreed on Friday to a ceasefire from May 9 to May 11 as part of a U.S.-led push for peace under President Donald Trump after more than four years of war following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.Trump said on Friday he hoped the ceasefire would be extended, but it was already showing signs of strain on Sunday, when each side accused the other of violating it.RELATEDUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on…

The Air Force has quietly assembled an “AI Action Team” to help leaders think through ethical challenges, develop literacy in the force and identify new applications for the tech, the service’s senior enlisted leader said this month.Among those new uses, CMSAF David Wolfe said, was promotion board screening and ranking. Speaking at an event hosted by Military Officers Association of America May 8, Wolfe suggested that smart computing could help the service improve in what he said was a longtime area of weakness: employing the best personnel.“We don’t really do talent management in the Air Force; we do replacement management,”…

Gobblers are re-grouping. Hens are nesting. Heavy hunting pressure has likely reduced the amount of gobbling you’ll hear in the woods.  Those are the obvious challenges, but the good news is that there’s still some incredible hunting to be had. I have deep experience hunting late toms, but i’ve also had the opportunity to interview excellent turkey hunters from around the country.  There’s a playbook for…

United States President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian peace plan, calling the proposal “totally unacceptable.” At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the war was “not over.” Trump issued the statement on his TruthSocial feed, rejecting the “unacceptable” Iranian proposal aimed at ending the war. “I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called “Representatives.” I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.” Iran offered to transfer some of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to a third country, but rejected the idea of dismantling its nuclear facilities,…

The remains of a U.S. Army soldier who was reported missing in Southern Morocco last week have been recovered, the Army said in a statement Sunday. First Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., of Richmond, Virginia, was found Saturday, one week after he and another soldier were reported missing. The two soldiers entered the ocean on May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area during a joint military exercise. The Moroccan Army said the soldiers went missing near a cliff. The second service member, whose name has not been released, remained missing Monday. Key, 27, was involved in African Lion 26,…

This article was originally published by Matt Hisrich at The Mises Institute.  While reading The Wealth of Shadows—Graham Moore’s excellent historical novel about pre-World War II global finance—I couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of unease regarding the current state of international economics. Set just before the United States enters World War II, the book follows the adventures of a plucky group of Treasury Department employees unofficially working to undermine the German economy while officially maintaining the US position of neutrality. Two figures outside of the US loom large in the narrative—Hjalmar Schacht in Germany and John Maynard Keynes in…

This story, “A Hunter Is Born,” appeared in the February 1985 issue of Outdoor Life. Even a quarter-mile distant, the buck looked huge. His long body stood out black against golden aspens and, when he raised his head, the massive antlers glowed in the first sun of morning. “Just look at him!” Don whispered, breaking the stillness. I realized that I’d been holding my breath. “That’s about as big as they come,” l said softly, as much…
