Mexico has started training rescue dogs to detect flesh-eating screwworm larvae in livestock wounds. The invasive “flesh-eating parasite” is an aggressively annoying fly, and could pose another risk to the United States’ meat industry. Senasica’s Canine Trainer Center, Ceacan, has recruited rescue dogs for a three-month intensive training program, teaching the canines how to sniff out and detect the New World screwworm larvae within the open wounds of livestock or agricultural products, according to The Straits Times. Colin Woodall, the CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, told NPR that this parasite is a major threat to the beef industry. After…
Sign up for the Quick Strike Newsletter The hottest fishing news, tips, and tactics I’ll fess up. Nothing is more blood-pressure raising to me than pinning a big trout on an itty-bitty dry fly. Scoring the take is the fun part, no doubt, but whenever I’m trying to feed a hefty brown or rainbow a size 20 or 22 fly with a minuscule hook, I just assume the fish won’t make it to the net after the slurp. That’s a bad attitude, I know, but fishing micro dry flies also means fishing hair-thin tippet. Quite often, however, this is the…

This article was originally published by Marcos Giansante at The Mises Institute. In most of the world, inflation is no longer an exception; it is the rule. Official inflation targets of 4 percent, 5 percent, or even 6 percent per year have become normalized, sold as signs of macroeconomic health. Yet these same rates quietly destroy savings, erode wages, and discourage long-term planning—especially for the poor. At just 6 percent annual inflation, the purchasing power of $100 drops to under $55 in ten years. Figure: Real value of $100 after 10 years at 6 percent annual inflation (Source: US Inflation Calculator)…

More and more people, especially those in urban and suburban areas, have come to realize the importance of being ready for emergencies. One concern that is common among urban preppers is how to prepare effectively without letting the entire neighborhood know you’re stocked and ready. That’s where a low-profile survival plan comes in. If you live in an apartment complex, a cul-de-sac, or a tightly knit community, drawing attention to your preparedness efforts can make you a target when things go awry. The last thing you want during a crisis is to become a target. Let’s look at ways to…

SAN FRANCISCO — A deputy commanding general testified Monday that military forces called in to assist with immigration raids in Los Angeles were allowed to take some law enforcement actions despite a federal law that prohibits the president from using the military as a domestic police force.Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman said military tapped to assist with domestic operations can protect federal property and federal agents in their mission carrying out federal operations. He said they could take certain law enforcement actions, such as setting up a security perimeter outside of federal facilities, if a commander on the ground felt unsafe.Sherman…
August is National Sandwich Month. For most people, it is a fun excuse to enjoy a sub, a grilled cheese or maybe a new deli spot. For service members, however, the sandwich represents something more sacred. It is not just a quick meal. It is the backbone of military dining. From shelf-stable MRE pouches to DFAC paninis and gas station hoagies grabbed before a convoy, the sandwich has become a culinary staple within the ranks. For an institution built on discipline and structure, the military’s most enduring food innovation is a lesson in improvisation. The sandwich is not flashy, but it…
The Army has activated about 800 D.C. National Guard soldiers to support law enforcement across the nation’s capital, where President Donald Trump has declared a public safety emergency despite the city’s mayor saying crime there is on the decline.A defense official told Military Times on Monday that troops should arrive by midweek, with “mission planning ongoing.” Between 100-200 soldiers at any given time will be supporting law enforcement with administrative tasks, logistics and physical presence, according to the Army.“They will be strong, they will be tough and they will stand with their law enforcement partners,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said…
