This article was originally published by John W. Whitehead and Nisha Whitehead at The Mises Institute.  “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.”—H.L. Mencken Let’s not mince words: every American should be alarmed by President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tactics, theatrics, and threats. What is unfolding in the nation’s capital is a hostile takeover of our constitutional republic. This is no longer about partisan politics, wag-the-dog distractions from the Epstein debacle, or even genuine national security concerns. This is martial law disguised…

Marine Corps reenlistments are a time-honored tradition that symbolize a renewed commitment to serving both the nation and the Corps. With it comes a public reaffirmation of the Marine’s oath of enlistment, a solemn promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. The ceremony is often tailored to the Marine reenlisting, and for the most part, where the ceremony takes place is up to the service member. Most Marines play it safe and will host their ceremony near headquarters or somewhere on level ground that’s easily accessible. Every once in a while, however, a wild card is…

The Washington, D.C., police chief stepped up cooperation between her officers and federal immigration officials as President Donald Trump’s law enforcement takeover of the nation’s capital took root Thursday. National Guard troops watched over some of the world’s most renowned landmarks and Humvees took up position in front of the busy main train station. The police chief’s order establishes that Metropolitan Police Department officers may now share information with immigration agencies regarding people not in custody — such as someone involved in a traffic stop or checkpoint. MPD officers may also provide “transportation for federal immigration employees and detained subject,” the…

An F-15D Eagle flight that was apparently intended to be a reward for hard work ended up not getting off the ground, when its passenger was ejected while the fighter was still on the flight line. The video, posted Wednesday on the unofficial Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page, shows the immediate aftermath of the unusual on-the-ground ejection, as an F-15 from the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts slowly rolls down the flight line, away from a plume of smoke that was left behind by the ejection. The unfortunate airman who seconds before was its passenger, who…

As a World War II fighter pilot, Joe Peterburs remembers flying with a wingman who always “had his six.” It was a little different this past weekend when the 100-year-old veteran soared into the skies in a vintage North American P-51H Mustang from California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport. This time, his wingman was his granddaughter, Sabrina, who was buckled into a P-51D Mustang alongside his plane as they flew along the Pacific Coast.“Her wingtip was about two feet away from mine,” he recalled in a Zoom interview. “We were flying in close formation and we were waving to each other. She…

The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disagrees with revoking women’s right to vote, after he reposted a video last week about Christian nationalist pastors who say they want to repeal the 19th Amendment and oppose women serving in certain combat and leadership positions.“Of course the secretary thinks that women should have the right to vote,” Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday.Pressed on why he reposted the video, Wilson said, “The secretary is a proud member of a church that is affiliated with the Congregation of Reformed Evangelical Churches, which was founded by Pastor…

Read the original article here. With his Aug. 11, 2025, announcement that he was sending the National Guard — along with federal law enforcement — into Washington, D.C. to fight crime, President Donald Trump edged U.S. troops closer to the kind of military-civilian confrontations that can cross ethical and legal lines.Indeed, since Trump returned to office, many of his actions have alarmed international human rights observers. His administration has deported immigrants without due process, held detainees in inhumane conditions, threatened the forcible removal of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip…
