Safariland IncogX Holster Review – The Truth About Guns

Safariland is among our largest institutional suppliers. If you have served in police or military duty you have probably carried Safariland. It isn’t the low bid but a reliable and workmanlike design in every example I have tested.

Among the most interesting holsters I have evaluated in the past few months is the Safariland IncogX. This holster is intended for use as an Appendix carry holster but it is also useful in the standard behind the hip inside the waistband carry.

While some find AIWB carry new and controversial I do not. Appendix carry has been a staple of concealed carry for at least a hundred years. Tucking a handgun in the waist between the belt buckle and the hip has always been natural.

I would say that perhaps ninety per cent of the armed criminals I dealt with carried their pistols in this manner. Many plainclothes officers adopted this carry with an inside the waistband holster. The difference is that now we have purpose designed holsters to maximize this type of carry.

I often carry the Glock 19 or Glock 49 9mm handguns. There is something I adhere to called the Certainty Principle. Not to be confused with Heisenberg’s Uncertainly Principle the Certainty Principle means you may rely upon your gear as much as humanly possible. Glock, Safariland, Streamlight and Federal ammunition are among those I consider part of the Certainty Principle. I carry too many different guns and types and there is no end in sight, but the Safariland IncogX is a type I reach for often. I have tested many holsters and carried daily for most of my life.

The IncogX is at the top of the list in many ways. The holster is constructed of Bolatron a heavy duty thermoplastic resin. The IncogX is covered in a thin hide material making for greater comfort. The holster is viable in standing, seated, and driving draw positions. A behind the back holster would not be immediately accessible in all situations. As for safety keep your finger off the trigger when drawing and holstering.

IncogX AIWB holster review

The handgun’s handle lies across the appendix region when carrying  in the standard AIWB position. Speed is excellent. Don’t rush to the handle and draw. Run the hand up from under the handgun and scoop it from the holster on the way up. If seated the hands may practically set on top of the handgun with no one the wiser. An advantage often overlooked is that retention may be enhanced as the wearer may have both hands available to parry an attack.

The IncogX is supplied with offset tools that make it adjustable for offset from the body. An attachment carrying a magazine carrier is also available. The IncogX is fully compatible with red dot optics or the combat light of your choice, specify the light when ordering.

It is a nature of the beast that a light bearing holster isn’t as secure when the gun is worn without the combat light. After all it is designed as a holster for carrying a handgun with the light mounted. The IncogX beats that problem and seems to maintain a secure fit without the combat light mounted.

Some of the features of the Safariland IncogX:

  • 3 Sizes of Concealment Enhancing Clip strut shims
  • Micro and full-size red-dot compatibility
  • Microfiber suede-wrapped Boltaron body
  • Optional magazine caddy with tension adjustment
  • Belt attached polymer clips
  • Passive trigger guard and ejection port retention
  • Sight channel height is .406″
  • Clip strut shims in : 1/8”, 1/4″, and 3/8”

I find the IncogX a great concealed carry holster. It fills the bill for design and build integrity.
