As the old saying goes, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

That’s the lesson a jealous, and dangerous, Florida man recently learned when he decided to assault one of his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriends. Threatening someone that you’ll shoot them is dangerous in more ways than one—it’s illegal, plus it can get you killed.

Such was the case in a September 4 incident in St. Petersburg, Florida. According to police, 39-year-old Matthew Weisner was drinking with his girlfriend, Amber Souza, at her house in Pinellas Park when the two began arguing. Soon, according to reports, “Weisner began contacting Souza’s previous boyfriends out of jealousy.”

One ex-boyfriend Weisner called was Michael McMann. During the call, Weisner began yelling and threatening to harm McMann with a firearm, even saying that he would be coming to McMann’s home to get him.

When Weisner arrived at McMann’s house later, McMann wasn’t there. However, his younger brother, Austin McMann was, and Weisner’s sudden arrival startled him.

Austin McMann later told detectives that he didn’t know who Weisner was but thought he might have been in a car accident because of the speed and angle that he pulled up to the house, where he had stopped partially on the road and partially on the property.

When Austin went outside the house with a firearm and demanded that Weisner leave, Weisner started yelling and reached into the console of this truck. According to the sheriff’s report: “Austin heard a sound he felt was consistent with the racking of a gun slide and saw corresponding movement.”

That’s when the younger brother fired multiple shots, gravely wounding the aggressor. Austin McMann then ran back into the house and called 911.

While the investigation is ongoing, Austin is claiming self-defense in the altercation. Weisner remains on life support at a local hospital with what detectives called a “non-survivable gunshot wound to the head.”
