President-elect Donald Trump is actually quite serious about acquiring the country of Greenland. But he seems to be the only one sure he can do it. Russia has described the US president-electâs plan as âeccentricâ and âtotally unworkable,â a sentiment further echoed by most other ruling classes.
Trumpâs idea has so far been dismissed by the current administration of US President Joe Biden, the European Union, Denmark, and the ruling class of Greenland itself. The media outlet Reuters said Trumpâs renewed statements, on taking Greenland, however, indicate that his desire is a âdeep-rooted ambitionâ rather than âa fleeting fancy.â
Nonetheless, Trump is said to be serious about his plan to force Greenland to become part of the U.S. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, Reuters has reported, citing sources familiar with the US president-electâs thinking. The plan is part of Trumpâs efforts to expand Americaâs global influence and secure his presidential legacy, the outlet explained.
Trump has argued that U.S. control over the Arctic island is a national security imperative, and has not ruled out taking the territory by force if necessary. The former property developer first floated the possibility of acquiring Greenland during his previous term in office, calling the potential acquisition âa large real estate deal.â âRT
The war-mongering never ends and comparing it to a âreal estate acquisitionâ doesnât make the part about taking a country by âforceâ any more appealing.
Greenland is the worldâs largest island and it lies between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is home to a large U.S. military base and is located on the shortest route from North America to Europe. Its territory is larger than Mexico but is home to fewer than 57,000 permanent residents. The island gained home rule from Copenhagen in 1979.
Trump has also been making statements that allude to the potential takeover of Canada much to the chagrin of the very left-leaning ruling class of its northern neighbor.
